Due to an increase of individuals falling victim to telephone scams, the Brownsburg Police Department would like to remind our citizens to be vigilant and cautious when receiving phone calls requesting personal information, including Social Security numbers, any and all bank account details, or other sensitive information. Typically, scammers will pose as a trusted organization, such as Law Enforcement (Federal or Local), and/or banking institutions.
Reminder: Never share personal and/or banking information over the phone. Best practice is to hang up with the caller and contact your banking institution by a trusted phone number that is often found on the back of your credit and/or debit card. Take note of unknown phone numbers not linked to the Law Enforcement/Government agency and/or your banking institution and any expressed sense of urgency to take action by the caller.
Lastly, contact your local Law Enforcement agency if you receive a suspicious call prior to complying with the caller’s request.
